Scott Statement on Republican Gimmick to Cancel Sequestration
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement in opposition to H.R. 6365:
"The bill offered by the Republican leadership today does nothing to stop sequestration and if enacted would actually make cancelling the sequester more difficult. The bill requires that in order to cancel the sequester for one year, Congress either enact legislation that complies with the draconian reconciliation instructions passed earlier this year or pass alternate legislation that cuts spending by the same amount of the sequester. The bill explicitly prohibits Congress from considering any new revenue to cancel the sequester, such as allowing all or some of the Bush-era tax cuts to expire as currently scheduled. In essence, the bill has no effect unless subsequent legislation is passed. Of course that subsequent legislation could be passed without even passing H.R. 6365. Insofar as the bill has no effect, the House Republicans have wasted yet another day of the few remaining that Congress will be in session before the November election in order to debate a nonsensical bill that does nothing to actually cancel the sequester."
